The $2 million “face lift” of the UTD Activity Center, which will upgrade sports facilities and add new office space, is slated to break ground in late April or early May.
An additional 13,528-square-foot will be added to the existing 75,000-square-foot center and will include a state-of-the-art addition. The annex will include a fitness and workout facility, as well as a multipurpose room to be used for dance, karate, cheerleading, yoga and other athletic activities.
“Now these classes can actually get their own space to work instead of working out of the Auxiliary Gym,” said Damon Enriquez, the UTD director of Recreational Sports.
The 10-month reconstruction will also expand the athletics
ics wing adding 10 new office suites, a reception area, a conference room and many other offices. The training area and locker capacity will double in size, and a larger storage area and mechanical room will be added.
“I am really excited to see how this turns out, because it will be a great addition to the building and campus when it is all over,” Enriquez said. “It is up to the contractors to keep things safe and in control once construction starts, but our main objective is the quality of the work that is done.”
Enriquez hopes that no part of the Activities Center will be closed when construction starts, but if parts of the building do need to close, activities and equipment will be moved around to make it accessible to students and faculty, he said.
