The Mercury is an award-winning, editorially independent news publication that focuses on UTD, its people and its surrounding communities.

The Mercury publishes through both print and digital mediums, which currently include our website, social media accounts and print newspaper. These platforms provide the UTD community with news, life and arts, sports, student and community opinions and a public forum for discussion.

The Mercury provides our staff with opportunities to strengthen their skills as writers, artists, photographers, editors and leaders. We encourage critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches through our independent editorial judgments made by student leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds, disciplines and expertise.

Like our home institution of UTD, The Mercury is committed to prioritizing excellence and fairness at every level — both within our contributors and across our coverage. We are dedicated to teaching our members the fundamental principles and skills of journalism as they explore, document and report on affairs at UTD. Not only do we aim to inform and entertain our readers, but we serve the UTD community by investigating crucial subjects and helping hold those in power accountable.

The Mercury is a publication by students and for students. While we will happily cover non-student members of UTD, our coverage aims to enrich the student body and reflect the broad range of perspectives within our campus student population first and foremost.

Although The Mercury is funded through student fees and housed within Student Media in the Office of Student Affairs, we are fundamentally a student-run organization whose guiding principle is to provide timely information to the student body while giving all students, faculty and community members a chance to express their voices and viewpoints. Views expressed within The Mercury are diverse and are not necessarily representative of the views of our editorial board, UTD administrators, faculty, staff, students or other constituencies.
