* Anyone can be struck by depression or suicidal thoughts, regardless of race, gender, age, socioeconomic status, etc.
** Calling suicide a ‘selfish’ act insults the deceased and perpetuates the false belief that clinical depression is a minor or trivial concern, which can prevent those who actually suffer from it from getting the help they need. Genuine depression is a mental illness that can be just as debilitating as a physical one, and it is different from just “feeling a bit down.”
