Open tryouts slated for volleyball squad

For anyone whose ever set anything other than a table or spiked anything besides a punch bowl, there may be a place for you on UTD’s newly-forming competitive women’s volleyball team.

New volleyball coach Marci Sanders is taking the first step toward stocking her roster by hosting an open volleyball tryout from 10 a.m.-noon, Feb. 6 in the UTD Activity Center main gym.

To be eligible, candidates must be full-time students and meet other NCAA eligibility requirements. The UTD women’s volleyball team will begin play this September.

IM volleyball playoffs open Feb. 2

Intramural volleyball wrapped up its regular season play on Jan. 28 with 25 teams advancing to the playoffs.

The playoffs are slated for Feb. 2-5 with three games each night beginning at 6 p.m. The intramural volleyball champions will be crowned following the finals on Feb. 5.

“There are tons of people who come to watch, especially for the freshmen and student organizations,” said Intramural and Club Sports Coordinator Steve Anderson, “It’s a lot of fun.”

“It’s a sport I really like and I’ve been playing since seventh grade and it’s time to spend with friends and have a good time,” said Abraham Rivera, a sophomore business major..

More than 50 teams competed in this year’s volleyball tourney.

UTD picked second

in pre-season poll

UTD men’s baseball team received five first-place votes, but finished second behind Mississippi College in the American Southwest Conference East Division pre-season poll.

Voting among the conference’s coaches and sports information directors placed UTD narrowly behind the first-place Choctaws, who received 120 points and 11 first-place votes. UTD had 116 points.

The Comets, who finished 26-17, 16-8 last year, open the 2004 campaign Feb. 17 on the road against Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
