Malone named player of the week
Junior guard Jason Malone was named American Southwest Conference East division player of the week for the games played Jan. 26 – Feb. 1.
In the three wins that propelled UTD into sole possession of first place in the East, Malone averaged 21 points on 48 percent shooting.
Malone hit eight of 12 three-point shots and went 13-of-16 from the free throw line over the span.
This is the second time this year Malone has been honored as East player of the week.
He also won the award for the week ending Dec. 22.
“It’s a nice thing to be recognized, but he’s a pretty humble person,” Butterfield said.
Malone is more focused on helping the Comets win every contest than on individual awards, Butterfield said.
“He doesn’t let that notoriety go to his head,” Butterfield said.
Volleyball players selected
Newly hired UTD women’s volleyball coach Marci Sanders has invited six current UTD students to be a part of the inaugural team.
The team is slated to begin play next fall.
More than 20 students, many with previous high school and club volleyball experience, participated in drills and training during a Feb. 6 campus-wide open tryout.
Sanders aims to recruit freshman and transfer players to complete the roster.
Any students still interested in playing on next year’s squad should contact Sanders at 972-883-2012 or at
